Imperial's #1591 STORYBOOK MUG

by
John Valentine

The fascinating little mug with the Elephant's Head and Trunk for a handle was designed by Horace King and was originally made by Heisey in 1947, which had plain panels, and was made for a very short time with no more than 400 reaching the market. The panels were later filled with nursery rhyme characters such as "Little Bo Peep" on each of the eight panels. The mould for the mug was one that was acquired by Imperial Glass when they bought the remaining moulds and Heisey's "Diamond H" trademark in 1958 after Heisey ceased production. Imperial later gave the "Nursery Rhyme" mug a new name which was the "Story Book" mug.

Mr. E. Ward Russell commissioned Imperial to produce for him several of these mugs in very limited editions. At this time Mr. Russell requested that the background of the panels be stippled to make a better effect for the carnival finish which he first used. The first 5 mugs made for Mr. Russell had the ground and polished base like the original Heisey one. After that Imperial began to use a collared base, thus eliminating the ground bottom version.

Number 1 thru 9 are Mugs made for E. Ward Russell:
